We study aging of the alveoli, the sites of gas exchange in the lung. Using genetic, transcriptomic and single-cell approaches, my lab explores how alveolar cells become altered due to aging and age-related diseases. By precisely controlling and manipulating cell behaviors, interactions and functions, we hope to find ways to prevent or reverse these changes and associated disease pathologies in order to restore gas exchange.

Research in our lab and clinic focuses on the biochemical and molecular role of essential fatty acids and oxylipins in ageing. Within the context of metabolic disease, (gastrointestinal) inflammation and tumorigenesis we wish to (1) understand how fatty acids and oxylipins can be used as biomarkers of ageing and senescence processes,  and to (2) assess effects of lipid-defined nutrition and pharmacological interventions on ageing and longevity.
